About the book design and execution
This stylized cover uses an image suggestive of a torn page to convey the sense of vulnerability denoted by its title, The Art of Emotional Self-Defense. The absence of capital letters in the tilting hints at the intimate nature—the absence of formality—of the material. The purple adds warmth to the stark quality of the black and white as does the use of script for the author's name.
The interior features fonts that lean towards the formal, though the effect is balanced by the lower case lettering in the chapter titles and drop cap chapter opening. Note the minimalist elegant design of the table of contents and the striking effect of the diagonal line used subheaders of the preface, foreword, and opening chapter pages. The preface is set-off by a striking full page photo of the author and spouse, who figures prominently in the book, further enhancing the sense of the deeply personal material the reader is about to encounter. Three fonts were used: Bembo, Berling, Caravan LH Three.
